Kurnool: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and four other persons were killed in the helicopter (BELL 430) that crashed in the Nallamala Hills in bad weather on Wednesday losing radio contact an hour after take off from Hyderabad.
The bodies of Reddy, 60, who led his Congress party to a spectacular second consecutive victory in the Lok Sabha and Assembly polls, and his special secretary P. Subramanyam, chief security officer A.S.C Wesley, pilot Group Captain S.K. Bhatia and co-pilot M.S. Reddy were found on Rudrakonda Hill, 40 nautical miles east of here, besides the mangled remains of the helicopter.
Union home minister, Mr P. Chidambaram officially confirmed the death of Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy and four others in a helicopter crash.
Bodies were charred and the helicopter was broken, said Mr Chidambaram.
Mr P. Chidamabaram, who was supervising the massive search operation for the missing Bell 430 helicopter since it went missing on Wednesday morning, told reporters that he was officially announcing the death of YSR, as the chief minister was widely known.
"We are in deep mourning. We send our condolences to the families of YSR and the other four (who died in the helicopter crash)," he said, describing YSR as "a tall leader."
Chidambaram said the helicopter had crashed on a hillock in Kurnool district, but "It is not possible to say why it crashed. All that will have to dealt with later. Bodies are still lying on the hillock and efforts are being made to retrieve them; Don't know how long the process will take,” he added
